Funny Thing

I managed to lose the Photoshop file for the second panel in the last post, and ended up being reverted to the older version (the one you can see further down). Actually, I was thinking about going back anyway, as I wasn't too happy with the changes I had made. I must have done it unconsciously.

(Still pretty scary though, that I could wipe out a night's work without really noticing.)

Sequence

So, more work for Ran's Daughter. Working on a sequential hits me in pretty much all the areas I am worst at. Mainly consistency (especially of likeness) and backgrounds, plus having to draw mostly from imagination instead of laboriously copying references. Notice how these three frames demonstrate my struggle (or lack of struggle for the backgrounds part)...

Also notice my worrying inability to move the story along. :p

Rusty

Several days without much sketching, and trying to draw something from imagination, and you get a rusty picture.

But Also

A laborious sketch for a new "painting".

Moving On

This isn't that different, really, but it's not a direct copy of anything, at least.

It's a preliminary sketch for a story I'm starting to work on, code-named Icarus, in a fit of unoriginality, although the title I'm leaning towards tonight is actually Ran's Daughter.

This is supposed to be a picture of a child, maybe eight. I can see it, but I wonder if that's just me seeing what I'm imagining. Tell me if you can see it or not.

I like the story nuggets I have, but it looks like a hell of a long, frustruating road from here to having the story told. Still, here I go...

Fi... Um

I made a few very small changes last night, along with two attempts to redo the area along the left side, with all the straps or whatever they're supposed to be. I just can't seem to get something there that satisfies me. On the other hand, I'm approaching a limit of diminishing returns on this picture, so I should probably just move on.

Final or...

... final minus one. I need to stare at it for a couple of days before I can be sure.

Focus

Slowly, the remaining bits come into focus. Final chance to wreck things.

Invisible

The changes, that is. A fair bit of time spent doing things which probably don't make a lot of difference. Ah well, maybe tomorrow.

Stockings

Stockings are a pain in the ass to draw.

I think the arm came out not too bad anyway. Actually, getting the rendering of her stocking-clad arm right was enjoyable, in a way, even though it was tedious. We'll see if the mistake of drawing something in the forground first comes back to bite me later.

Little by Little

As I continue to work on this I feel I'm loosening up a bit. It feels good.

I'm pleased with my apparent progress at this point. Realism is a parlor trick, but a fun one to perform (or attempt), and I believe it does open the doors to more possibilities.

It will be interesting to come back to this picture a year or two later and see how I feel about it.

Ahh...

That's more like it. Now I'm having fun.

The wet-on-wet style of Artrage is still impossible for me to get a handle on, but Painter has much easier to control modes, for me (and is much more flexible). The pencil tool in Artrage is definitely the best I've found so far, though.

Or maybe I just needed to start painting a hottie again.

Hands

What this one has taught me so far is that Charlize actually has pretty freaky hands.

Also, comparing directly to the reference, things are... different. But then again, they always are.

And This

Just 'cause I can't stay away from drawing hotties.

Superhero

A doodle of Batman. This is the first time I think I've ever tried to draw Batman, and the first time in ages I have tried to draw anything super-heroic. If I bother bringing this into Photoshop and fooling around with it there are a bunch of things I think I will change right off.

Inspired by Joshua Middleton's latest blog post (his upcoming Batman cover). I don't know why, really, but I felt like trying a Batman, myself. Weird.

Comic Book Whatsits

First, a blatant imitation of a picture by Ryan Sook. All the good bits are his.

Second, a picture influenced by the first, obviously, but more just fooling around.

There are at least some new (or new-ish) directions opening up here, or perhaps they're old directions I'm rediscovering. Drawing in a comic book style makes me try to break down the picture into simple values, black or white. The pencil gives more flexibility, but trying to make it simple makes for stronger pictures, even if the shapes are still a bit... off.

Life Drawing Blargh

I've been frustrated with pretty much everything I've drawn for the past few days, and this is no exception. The good thing about it is that it was a chance to draw from life. Of course, that can be a little hard if your model won't sit still...
